Here’s one of the great paradoxes of life. The more affluent we become, the more self-absorbed we become. And the more self-absorbed we become, the more miserable we become.

Sometimes you’re pedalling so hard through life that you can become completely consumed with just living. Head down, pumping away … all we can think of is ourselves.

There was a time when God had blessed Israel abundantly, and they just stood back and looked at how much God had given them and they were overwhelmed with gratitude. So much so, that they gave incredibly generously and sacrificially towards the building of the Temple in Jerusalem. Bottom line; their gratitude turned into generosity.

King David declared before the assembly of Israel, when he saw how generously they had given:

1 Chronicles 29:13 And now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your glorious name.

For some people, it’s a long time since they’ve done that. It’s a long time perhaps since we’ve stood back and seen how much God has already blessed us. And let me tell you, when all of a sudden you start counting the blessings that God has heaped into your life, no matter how badly things might be going at the moment, you discover that it’s rather a long list. Focussing on that list, ends up flooding your heart with gratitude.

So, if things are perhaps getting you down at the moment, take a moment to focus on the many blessings that God has already given you. Let Him flood your heart with gratitude and allow that gratitude to turn into generosity.

Because that generosity, that sense of giving to God and to others with a grateful heart, is the best way to take the focus off yourself.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
