Matthew 10:29-31 When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one of those little birds can die without your Father knowing it. God even knows how many hairs are on your head. So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than a whole flock of birds.

The notion that God can be intimately involved in our lives … well, sometimes it just sounds crazy. Hey, sometimes you and I don’t even know what’s going on. How can a busy God possibly keep up with it all?

I had lunch recently at one of those franchised coffee shops. The young woman serving me had obviously been told to ask for my name. “Berni,” I replied. And every sentence after that, she used that word “Berni”.

“Are you shopping today, Berni?” “No.” “You must be working then, Berni.” “Yes.” On and on it went. From my perspective, it was like talking to a robot. But that wasn’t the worst of it.

It all came terribly unstuck when she passed the piece of paper with my name and order on it to the person making my lunch. After that, somehow I became “Charlie.” Don’t ask. I have no idea.

It can be a pretty transactional, impersonal world out there, can’t it? And honestly, I used to imagine that God would be a bit like that. How could He possibly keep up with everybody’s name, let alone what’s going on in our lives? Jesus had rather a different take on that. He said:

Matthew 10:29-31 When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one of those little birds can die without your Father knowing it. God even knows how many hairs are on your head. So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than a whole flock of birds.

The truth is that God cares so much about us. He knows every little detail of our lives. Not just our names – everything – how we feel, what’s happening, what’s up next … everything. That has to be good news, do you think?

Oh, and for the record, He’s never once called me Charlie!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
