Ephesians 5:4 Also, there must be no evil talk among you. Don’t say things that are foolish or filthy. These are not for you. But you should be giving thanks to God.

Sometimes, being a disciple of Jesus Christ, means standing apart from the crowd and being different. Not always, but sometimes. And when that time comes, we each have an important choice to make.

When was the last time that you heard a dirty joke? I bet it was pretty funny. And when was the last time that, perhaps, you told a dirty joke?

Before I gave my life to Christ, I used to be the master of dirty joke telling. I even had a database of them on my computer at work, with which I would regale my friends and colleagues. It made me feel good I guess.

But then I gave my life to Jesus. It wasn’t hard to stop with the dirty jokes initially, because the love that I’d experienced from the Presence of the Holy Spirit in me was simply overwhelming.

But after a year or two, the temptation came back. The temptation to work the crowd, to get a laugh, to feel good. But let me tell you something, if you’re someone who loves Jesus, then crudeness and dirty jokes simply don’t belong in your life. They’re completely out of place.

And sometimes, that means walking away from the crowd. Sometimes people will point their fingers at you and call you a wowser. So be it.

Ephesians 5:4 Also, there must be no evil talk among you. Don’t say things that are foolish or filthy. These are not for you. But you should be giving thanks to God.

I know that it’s hard to walk away from the crowd. I know that it’s difficult when they snigger at you behind your back.

But each one of us has to decide – who are we in the business of pleasing? The crowd? Or Jesus? Decide.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
