Leviticus 26:11-13 I will place my dwelling in your midst, and I shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be their slaves no more; I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. (NRSV)

Okay, here’s a trick question that’s not so much of a trick at all. In fact, it’s pretty straight forward. Think before you answer it. If you judge God by His actions, then what is the one thing, according to His Word, that He wants more than anything else?

One of the things that happen when you regularly spend time in God’s Word is that you start to hear the heartbeat of God. At first, it can be quite faint. But the more you allow the Spirit to lift the words off the pages and write them on your heart, the louder His heartbeat becomes.

And underlying everything in the Bible – every story, every letter – is the desire, the passion of God to be close to His people. Here it is:

Leviticus 26:11-13 I will place my dwelling in your midst, and I shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be their slaves no more; I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. (NRSV)

Do you hear the passion, the heartbeat of God in those words? He wants to be your God. He wants you to be one His people. He wants to dwell in our midst, for us to know Him and to be close to Him.

From beginning to end, the Bible is the story of this God who above everything wants to be close to you.

He wants that so much, that He sent Jesus to suffer and die to remove the one thing separating us from our God – our sin.

So the next time you’re feeling alone, remember this: your God aches to be close to you.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
