Being hungry is not a lot of fun. Have you ever sat in a meeting you couldn’t get out of, or been in a situation where food simply isn’t available, with your stomach grumbling and complaining? Nope. It’s not a lot of fun.

One of the things that I’ve incorporated into my lifestyle, is intermittent fasting. Giving your body a break from food is an incredibly healthy thing to do. It’s known to improve health outcomes and indeed, to extend your lifespan. And once it becomes a habit, your body simply adjusts and you don’t feel hungry much at all.

But at the end of a fast, there’s nothing more delightful, more satisfying, more nourishing than tucking into some good, healthy, whole food.

The longest ever recorded fast was by Angus Barbieri a 27-year-old Scotsman, so hugely obese that he couldn’t even get out of bed. He went for 382 days (under strict medical supervision I might add) on just water, vitamins and a bit of yeast. So, we can go a long time without food, but eventually, you do have to eat.

Here’s what bothers me though. So many people who believe in Jesus are fasting spiritually. Whilst physical fasting has lots of benefits, spiritual fasting, staying away from God, shunning Jesus, makes absolutely no sense at all. These people have an almost non-existent prayer life, they never hear God speak His Word and they wonder why they’re starving, why this being a Christian just isn’t working for them. It doesn’t make sense.

John 6:35 Then Jesus said, “I am the bread that gives life. No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who believes in me will ever be thirsty.”

Jesus is the one who gives life. So when you feel as though you’re starving, go to Him. He is the bread of life.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
