Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents the way the Lord wants, because this is the right thing to do. The command says, “You must respect your father and mother.” This is the first command that has a promise with it. And this is the promise: “Then all will go well with you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

If you’d asked me to a word association test before I became a Christian, and you’d thrown in the word “Bible” I’d have responded without thinking, with “old-fashioned”. But there are some surprisingly contemporary, relevant things there in the Bible.

The things that we place value in as a society … well, it’s a funny thing but they seem to have changed over time. Let me give you an example. You don’t hear many people these days talking about the idea of honour.

Honour your father and your mother for instance – one of the Ten Commandments. It can seem a bit … well, – old fashioned, when you hear it put that way.

But flip that around, and the reality is that we all want to be honoured.

I was in a bank the other day and watched a young woman serving another customer. She was so disinterested – she treated the customer like a slab transaction, not like a person. And I thought to myself, “I bet you that customer doesn’t feel like the bank wants her business.” You see, it’s about honour.

It turns out that honouring other people isn’t as old fashioned as we might have thought because when someone honours us, they’re saying, “I care about you. I value you, and you know something, I’m prepared to serve you.”

Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents the way the Lord wants, because this is the right thing to do. The command says, “You must respect your father and mother.” This is the first command that has a promise with it. And this is the promise: “Then all will go well with you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

Honour. It begins in the home. Teach your children to honour you. And you, in turn, if your parents are still alive, honour them.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
